Talk to them about what they know before the reading. Brainstorm and make a web on the board or even just a list. You can also put them into small groups and ask them a simple question about an aspect of their lives that would apply to the story.
As they read they can make connections between what they know and what they have discovered from the reading.
Go over some vocabulary words that are essential to their understanding of the reading.

Reading to the class

Talk to them about the front cover, what do they think the story is about and how do they know that. It encourages enthusiasm for book content. Tell them the name of the person who wrote the story.

Describing the picture and what's going on. Let your finger follow the text so they can see we read from left to right.

Get them to explain what the picture is showing

Get them to predict what they think may happen next

Relate the story to their lives by questioning

Once they are very familiar with a story, they can 'pretend to read it to others, because they'll know what the pictures mean.

On an actual reading level, books that have just one word and an object on each page. They can then transfer this word they see to writing...that is you write the word large, clip tracing paper over it and let the child try to trace over the word.

Hope this helps a bit.

Read the selection (Read). Try and recite as much of the information that was read (Recite). Then look back over the reading again (Review).
