My 5 month old has a horrible cough, he's had it on and off for about a month, first he had an ear infection, then a throat infection and now he has this cough that has gotten worse and is accompanied by a stuffed runny nose. I have taken him to the doctors several times, and also the emergency room because he WOULD not sleep and I wanted to make sure it wasn't another ear infection. Just took him to the doctors 2 days ago, I was told it's only mucus from post nasal drip and was given infant decongestant which seems to be helping his nose, he's barely stuffed up but his cough has gotten worse he doesn't know enough (obviously) to spit out what he coughs up. Is there any suggestions on how to get the mucus out? I have a vaporiser in his room at night to help him while he sleeps.

The mucus in the chest is usually the last to go. I suggest like the other poster in taking a bulb suringe and when he coughs try to get int heri and gentle suck it out like we do when they are newborns. They have baby vicks that is safe to use on his little chest to help him breath. They also have those plug in vapo in the wall that are wonderful. It fills the room with a soothing vapo smell and it is safe for little ones. I have used it in the past for my daughter and it really does help. Some of this stuff just has to run it's course unfortantely. Just try to make him as comfortable as possible. Yes formula will get them yucked up too. Prop his mattress up underneath with a pillow or blanket so he can breath better at night.

Lay him across your knee and bang firmly by lightly on his back with the palm of your hand for a few minutes. You may even want to try doing it in the bathroom with the steam from a hot shower. It sounds to me like the start of bronchialitis or pneumonia. Ask your doctor to do an x-ray to rule out that possibility. You will also want to have his pulsox done. Any number lower then 90 is cause for concern. Unfortunately baby formula makes the mucus worse. You may find that after a feeding it seems like he is coughing more. Good luck!!

Does he seem bothered by the mucous? It's hard for us to watch and listen, and be unable to do anything about it. But i can tell you that unless he seems uncomfortable, it's probably bothering you worse than him! If he's having trouble breathing, by all means get him some help. But it sounds like you might be just struggling with the sound that it makes. Take a break and have someone else care for him for a while, if that's possible. Just have patience, it will pass! I would suggest laying him on your back and bang him on the back lightly and that should help the other thing that I found that helps my children is go to the store and buy the Vick's vapor bath for baby's that stuff works wounders all you do is put about a cap full in his bath and let him splash and play and he will breath in the vapors and it will help clear it up. I hope that this helps

You can buy a bulb syringe at most drug stores or Babies R Us. It can help draw out the excess mucus. Be gentle.

please don't use these ...there is a recall on Triaminic VaporPatch

when he coughs up the mucous and your near him...use the sucker thing that you have for his nose in his mouth...if you can get it in there fast enough...that's what i use to do, just like when they are born, they use that to suck out the mucous..
and ask a doctor if you can use vicks vapor rub on his chest.. mom use to use that on us all the time when we were little

use the saline nose dropps to try to dry it up a bit also try propping his head up with a pillow, it allows the mucus to flow easier.
