Ok I might be a little sad as I do know the answer. Most shops do close for Christmas and so forth but, even in the event that they don't the reason they have a lock on the door is for insurances puposes. To actually be able to gain building and content insurance the policy actually states that you have to have a lock on the door that meets their standards. It is the same thing for home insurance. Without a lock the policy would be void.

In Las Vegas, when they open a new casino, they unlock the front door then ceremoniously throw away the key.
Maybe the building was used for something else in the past.

Because if there was an emergency and the store HAD to close (example, a severe storm), they would be able to lock the store up. Just because it advertises it's open all the time, doesn't mean it can't close if it has to.

Some do close for Christmas and Thanksgiving. I have seen some close in my area for inventory, as well as when there is a robery.
