Overall, how would you say they are treated by others?

It depends on how thrilled I am with the choice of co-worker. The last one I have to admit I was pretty cold to, she was just beyond teaching, I feel bad about it now, but it was horrible. It's almost a year later and everyday I still have to stop and babysit her on something she's doing, she's very slow and acts stupid all the time because she thinks it's cute and a great way to get attention. In normal circumstances though I try to be nice and incredibly patient. I understand that the job I am teaching them is not easy, but I also expect at least a little bit of push from them on their end to actually listen and learn.

Since I am a home support worker, I don't meat many of the newbies personally. However, while caring for an elderly man one evening that requires 24 hour care, the new girl showed up extra early for the shift change because she was new. This was her first client ever and she was sent to spend the night. She wanted me to tell her everthing she needed to know but this was only my 2nd time with this client (I was just filling in for someone else) and I had never done a night-shift myself. So although I wasn't very helpful for this particular case I spent some time reassuring her and letting her know that things would get easier after she's been doing it for awhile. I hope she was more relaxed by the time I left but unless she attends the staff Christmas party (only about 35 of the 150 employees go) I might never see her again.

I'll bend over backwards to help them get settled in.

And I'll come down like a ton of rocks on anybody who gives newbies a hard time.

Bullying isn't something that only happens at school; I've seen so-called "adults" do it in the workplace too.

It's a detestable thing.

Depends on the position and if they are stupid. I know it sounds cruel but if you apply for a receptionist job and do not know how to answer a phone, I do not have sympathy for you!
