Hiya Im Nearly 16 And Have Always Wanted A Pet Of My Own Ever Since My 2 Rabits Died When I Was 8 :( And Ive decided I'd Like A Rat. Because I've Never Had One Before Would It Be Better To Get 1 Rat Or 2? Because 2 Would Keep Each Other Company When I'm At School, But Coz Iv'e Never Had One Would 2 Be To Much To Handle?

Rats are lovely friendly pets, 2 won't be too much to handle. Get 2 females - I currently have one pet rat because a friend of mine had 2 males which had to be separated when they started fighting. When you buy them they will probably be quite young, so it will be easy to teach them to recognise you and come to you when you open the cage door. I'm sure you'll enjoy looking after your rats, good luck :)

Rats make great pets. I had a few when I was a teen. I recommend 2 girls to keep each other company. If you can, get them very young and handle them a lot, they will be more tame. There are two things to take into consideration. One rats get cancer. There is nothing to prevent it. The other is that you have to keep the cage clean changing it about once a week. They also only live about 2 years.

Rats actually make good pets!! One would be fine alone but I would give it a few toys. They have to chew to keep their teeth down (rodent teeth grow) I think one of the best things to keep them occupied are nylabones. They are made for dogs so be care full what size you buy... I would start with a small one then work up to the larger sizes. Remember to keep the smell down you would have to clean the cage at least twice a week -every other day would be better. They do tend to use one corner of the cage to 'do their business' so it's not too bad, but a smelly cage won't make your parents too happy! Rats can be trained and they are very smart so be care full of what kind of cage you have them in. Hope you have fun with your new pet!

I kept rats for a few years, the best one I had was a white one called Ken. He lived for 3 years believe it or not. Its much easier to tame the rat and train it if its on its own. When I had more than 1 after Ken it wasnt as much fun as the rats were more interested in scrapping with each other than me. If you want the rat to be occupied give it a big cage with lots of things to climb on and explore like tunnels. They are super clever animals and get bored easily. Good luck and enjoy. ps use sesame seeds to train them. they love them.

Two rats definitely as you say they do keep each other company but make sure before hand that they get on. When you buy them either buy them from the same cage or put them together fo a while. I had two rats and they did not get on and the one ate the other..Not nice...

rats are lovely and loyal pets once their trained, one rat would need alot of attention but 2 would be fine with each other. If you're going to keep them in ya room then i'd recommend 2 females as male rats have a very strong smell to them and one male and one female would mean loadsa ratlets

Rats are quite social animals, so if you take only one, it'll be lonely if you don't give it a lot of attention. If you take 2 you'll dont have this problem, but you'll have to take 2 females. If you take a male and a female, they'll have a lot of little rats and if you take 2 males they'll fight a lot. So my advice is: Take one and love it a lot, you'll get a lovely pet.

My suggestion to you is pick another critter to make a pet. Rats are meant to live in alleys and garbage cans not in a family setting. Whats wrong with a cat or a dog? Or even a hampster or another rabbit would be nice pets. Getting them in twos is always best so they have a friend.

I would get 2 females, as 1 of each could mean babies and 2 males will fight over territory.Rats are intelligent and friendly.Good luck in your new role as a pet owner!
