I have general pieces and parts (hard drive, graphics card, dvd & cd drives) but am trying to figure out the mobo and cpus. There's more choices than there were the last time I bought a computer, so it's very overwhelming. Any help would be appreciated. My budget is flexible (currently at $500, saving a little more each payday) and I think I have some time before my old machine goes out. Any thoughts?

$500 for the CPU and mobo, right now. I'm saving up about $200 every couple of weeks, so money really isn't an issue. Family is helping out on the case, second hard drive, sound card and memory. This is really just a question of mother board and CPU. I'm a gamer and vidder who uses a lot of space hd space for clips. Premiere killed my Dell; I'm looking to build something with more chops.

Before I answer, could you clarify, do you have $500 to spend on just the CPU and motherboard, or is that for the entire system. Once I know that I can give you a better answer.

EDIT: Okay then you want one of the new Intel Core 2 Duos, they are the fastest processors out right now. The E6600 is about $315 so I would get that one. As for motherboard, try one of these:http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280+50001315+107171850&Subcategory=280&description=&Ntk=&srchInDesc=

that's a tough one to answer. By today's standards, you will need an sata hard drive and a pci-e video card. That said , this is a good deal

although you can't have an sli video soluton unless you get the nvidia 7950 video card. The processer isn't the top of the line core duo extreme, but that one is about $1000.00 alone.
If you prefer AMD, this bundle will allow sli with two video cards(pci-e) and you will still need an sata hard drive.http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2537651&CatId=2417
Hope this helped and didn't add to your confusion
