The Vampire myths go back a looong way. The Bible specifically forbids the drinking of blood in Leviticus xvii 10-14, bacause the 'blood is the life'. The oldest Vampire stories come from around Romania and also from Greece; and there are vampires stories as far apart as britain and Peking! Hungary has a long history of recording Vampires.
Main OLD legends of actual Vampires (because EVERY country has similar ghouls and goblins in their history) are found in Bulgaria, Romania, Turky, Greece, Croatia, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Russia, Hungary, and China. Its worth noting, the Slavonic regions and old Celtic stories connect the Vampire and the Werewolf VERY closely; some considering them to be the same thing; werewolves mortal and Vampires Immortal.

Transylvania is the country (part of Romania) and the fictional character, Dracula is based upon Vlad the Impaler. Romania is an extremely poor, almost backward country that is set to join the EU next year. It has little in the way of industry currently but expect to begin to see lots of tourist promotions encouraging you to go on Dracula tours etc. Transylvania is a beautiful part of the world so do try and go but make sure that you have garlic, a crucifix and holy water about your person, just in case....

The folklores about vampires exist in every culture, so I guess they do exist! Just like how there are holy beings and saints, I suppose there were evil beings and manifestation of evil spirits.
You should look them up in Wikipedia.
