Well yeah you can. Remember though the roots supporting the truck may sprout little trees for awhile. Once that stops, the roots are dead and the remaining truck is less stable and may topple.

What do to with trunk......if you leave just a short trunk, use it to support a bird feeder, bird waterer, big container with seasonal flowers. Also can become a garden bench if you add a overhanging wood platform (overhanging so your heels don't knock up against the trunk) Trick is to cut level.

Higher up the trunk could support bird feeders projecting from the sides. Also the dead trunk will get borers so having birds near by will supplement their diet with protein.

Taller trunk becomes a vine support. Unfortunately that looks like some unearthly creature emerging from the garden. Rather like putting a vine on a pole to hide it only to have it then become a focal point, especially at night......looming beast by moonlight.

You will be aware that every part of a Laburnum is toxic.

Laburnum in time arrives at a point when it has no aesthetic value, especially the trunk as it becomes riddled with cankerous infection.

As the wood turner suggests Laburnum is ideall for veneering, provided that the trunk is sound, for the purpose.

Have a look at several tree related websites, you might find inspiration, in particular:

www.trees.org.uk - Arboricultural Association

www.rfs.org.uk - Royal Forestry Society

Why are you looking to cut it down? Laburnums can be beautiful trees, perhaps it just needs pruning into a better shape?
If you do have to remove it (disease, etc) then please get the job done properly. Take off the bigger side branches first and then take the trunk down and dig out as much of the root as possible. Leaving the trunk behind always looks dreadful and like a job someone couldn't be bothered to finish - which it inevitably is.

You coudl alwasy contact a few local woodturners, see if they want the wood. tHey normally make you something ( clock, lamp, bowl ) in return.

So you'd have something from your tree as a momento.

Maybe try the independant machinery shops, they normally know of the local clubs
