Because there are so many groups of people who think they are the only ones who are "right" and sometimes it results to fanaticism. And, leaders are out to gain power and can't get along or come to a medium.

sadly there is ample evidence throughout history that people choose any cause for fighting instead of discussion violence breeds violence and makes matters worse
