I use an ice cube to rub on the gum until the gum is almost frozen, most of the time it just breaks apart, sometimes all of it won't come off so then I usually take manicure scissors and cut the remainder off the carpet. I hope this helps!

Freezing is ok if you want to pick at it for hours and then wind up cutting it out with scissors. Freezing works better on hard surfaces. If it is embedded deeply, any di-limonene based product from manufacuters of carpet care products such as
Motsenbockers LIFTOFF #2 ADHESIVES, GREASE & OILY STAINS REMOVER
willl disolve the gum and allow you to blot and clean the gum up with a minimum of effort.
Goo-Gone is Xylene based. It can discolor carpet and fabric if not used properly. make sure you wet the carpet after use with plain water and blot (dont rub) gently.

Have you tried the old ice cube trick that tends to work for clothes.
You basically freeze the chewing gum which makes it hard and brittle and you can pick it out then.
Alternatively use some freeze spray which has the same effect but ice cubes do the job much more economically

Peanut butter - no really, it just dissolves bubble gum then you can just wipe it up and use a little carpet shampoo

WD-40. Test it on a part of your carpet that doesn't show first to make sure it won't discolor it. It usually won't. Wd-40 works on all types of things: pen on walls, shoe scuffs, etc. Yes, I'm serious!

Two words - Razor Blade
You gotta cut that stuff out! Try to use soap and water to soften if needed.
