I overheard a guy at woork say that he tested his computer on the net and it gave him some sort of a rating. I would like to test speed and other perameters to see just how long I can hold out before I have to upgrade.

I suggest using Dr. Hardware. It can perform benchmarks on your hardware and tell you how it measures up to other hardware available.
