I found out 5 weeks ago that I am pregnant, it was a big surprise for me since due to some serious health problems I didn't think I'd be able to conceive. Funds are limited and I was wondering if anyone could tell me where to find cheap, free and/or discounted baby items as I know the costs really add up.

Thank you.

If there's a Salvation Army or Goodwill store in your area check those out. You can find some real good bargins. EBay is another place you could try- just watch the shipping costs as they are sometimes a rip-off.
Have a great day and hope it's a boy or girl.... wait.... are there any other choices? LOL

I agree with what others have said... Freecycle, Craigslist, ebay, all your local goods donation locations, yard sales, flea markets, churches. I have also been given a lot of items from my families friends and co-workers and neighbors have also offered items that they are no longer using. Also, make sure that you visit all the baby items websites you can think of... as stuff may not be free they do send alot of great coupons which really add up or baby clubs at your local grocery. Good Luck! ... and keep in mind you don't have to have everything that is suggested to have for a baby...i.e. a changing table (sure it's nice) but you can use your bed or a blanket on the floor too if necessary. Think of the most important things first.

Check out Freecycle.org. It's great. People will post the things that they have to giveaway and if you're interested you can reply to their emails and if they pick you, you go and pick it up. You can also list "Wanted" ads for things that you might need. There are always listings for baby items on the Freecycle in my area.

I got alot of baby things on eBay and got some really great deals. Garage sales are also good ways to find cheap stuff. Thrift stores, Goodwill, Salvation army and consignment shops have great deals as well.

Freecycle is great though, you should sign up today and starting watching the listings!

Yes, sign up for your local Free cycle net work on Yahoo. I am part of the freecycle in Queens.

There is one in each borough, don't forget to go or contact your local health department as well, they will assist you medically and financially if need be. They are great to new mothers and give you a year of health insurance while your child is covered indefenitly (well at least till you get on your feet and apply for health ins. for him/her).

You can also post on Cragislist for free items, a girl friend of mine was apple to snag items people didn't need anymore ie car seat, playpen, rocker - some were hardly used and most of all it's free, and don't believe the hype there are things in life that are FREEEEEE.

Good luck and Congratulations!

Be careful when buying from yard sales and thrift stores-sometimes the items are not very safe. Some older items have since been recalled or remanufactured due to safety concerns. You can find good items there, but just be aware!

Ross, target and Walmart, Kmart, always check these places out, constantly having sales on baby clothes, I always stop by and pick up like 6 outfits for $20-$30. Found lots of baby clothes at Ross for under $2. Craigslist has car seats (check for warranty, they do expire!) high chairs, toys, lots of stuff. lots of it is trust worthy cause baby's are simple and people buy way too much for it, they love to be naked but have 6x more clothes than me. and check with people with older kids, my sister gave my brother a stroller they used 3 times, and he also got a bunch of clothes from my nephew that were never even worn! good luck

go to any local church and tell them your situation. consignment shops or thrift stores (sometimes you can find one just for baby stuff) is also cheap. Garage sales, newspaper classifieds, friends and family. Ebay is another good one. Put a "wanted" add in the newspaper with a brief explination and someone might call you to give you stuff. Congrats and good luck!

If you go to www.craigslist.com it will have you choose your area and often people have baby stuff discounted or free that they are trying to get rid of. They usually have pictures too and so you know what you are getting. Good luck and Congrats!

Check your local Goodwill or Salvation Army store; also check with larger churches in your area; many have thrift shops; check your local phone book for second hand children's shops

nothing in this world is for free. and if there is any place that does offer stuff for free, then you must've done something that will make them want to REWARD you for what you did. but the cheapest place to BUY baby items is at Babies R Us.
