That would depend on how you define "outrageous uniqueness".

It could equally be said that conforming to some kind of conservative and safe norm is a subtle demand for attention. It's like one little ol' girl criticising another for having her belly button pierced and striving toward outrageous uniqueness when she, herself, has had both ears pierced.

I'd say that anybody - man or woman - with piercings of any type is demonstrating a craving for overly outrageous uniqueness. But only because I have no piercings.

It's all subjective, isn't it?

Overly Outrageous Uniqueness of course.

It certainly can be - but it really depends on the individual. A teenager will do this, but in the end they're doing it to "fit in" with a specific clique of other teenagers, thereby rejecting the "popular" kids who have likely rejected him/her. It's like the famous quote from "Life of Brian"

Brian: You have to be different!
The Crowd: Yes, we are all different!
Small lonely voice: I'm not!

subtle sign of insanity...lol. joking. For some people it is a cry for help, others, it's just them trying to be completely different from everyone else.
