I personally like the Hellraiser franchise,a lot of people think there are only three,it goes way beyond that!! #4 bloodlines is my least favourite the story line goeas haywire!! if you can get your hands on all 7 and start by reading Clive Barkers novella 'The hellbound heart' which the films based on, your gonna have a good halloween!! Failing that I found Wolf creek kinda disturbing! or i guess the sound of music??

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is sick and disturbing but not scary as such. I watched Jaws as a kid and i still can't hang my feet over the edge of a boat! The bits when the camera is just on top of the water still freak me out - despite the plastic shark. On that note, Open Water put my deepest fear onto screen, despite what a lot of people said. And finally, the Exorcist is not scary. At all.

What makes a movie truly scary is watching it by yourself on a night with no moon in a house that's empty on a quiet street.
Exorcism
Saw
The Shining
The Ring
Funny Scary movies
The Freddy series
Basket head
The ring 2
Scream series

For my money I'd do it alone so DVD and go for either:
The Shining - incidently the indoor shots (most of it) was filmed in a hotel in the UK. Anyone know where?
The Grudge - American version is pretty freaky as well as the original Japanese.
and just for farce try out:
Evil Dead 2 - more of a comedy horror really, but not a spoof

Number one listed in an online poll was The Shining with Jack Nicholson. Others were Nightmare on Elm Street, the original Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, and that is all of the titles I can remember. Hope this helps. :)

I thought What Lies Beneath with Harrison Ford was quite scary. Scream 2 - It made me scared to go to public loos for a long time - especially in the cinema when it is quiet and no one else is meant to be there :-<
