While sql server is active, some related data folders are not allowed to be copied.

No it does not cause any damage to data.But if u want to copy the .mdf database files u have to stop the server.Then copy the databse to the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data.
and u also have to attach that database also from enterprise manager
click microsoft SQL server->SQL server groups->local(databases)->then right click here u will get the option to attach database in all task submenu.Only thne that database can be used.

Yes surely I myself has done it to make my PC faster it only stops the sQl server processes to stop temporarily.

It is definitely not encouraged to do that since there are risks involved although the regular kill signal will allow the program to do a clean exit if it responds properly.
