A pop song, eh? I think the song writer should list a few tunes and then sing with the lyrics. Finally choose the one that suits the best! That's what I did. I'm not a songwriter but i like to write songs!

it depends, some times you might have a tune in your head and you add the words later. Other times you come up with a line or two and start adding to it once you have finished the whole song you may find the music comes naturally, it is really how YOU do things there is no right or wrong way to do this.

Depends on the songwriter. There are an infinite number of ways to begin writing a song.

it depends what comes to you first. For me personally, i'd find it much easier to write a lyric to a tune. If you are a better instrument player than lyricist, this is probably what happens. Otherwise, it could be the other way around

I have a lot of words that need tunes so if anyone gets caught short? I would have thought words first but then maybe not unless it`s an instrumental!

probably sits at a mixing machine to get the worst but most catchiest tune ever and then gets his 2 year old son to write the lyrics........ we write lyrics for our band we allways start with the tune and put the words to it

i think that he writes the tune first. That's what R.E.M. did with all their songs. I think it's easier that way. Unless they have a really great set of lyrics, then they write the tune last.

Usually neither they just sing howl or screech whatever their manager asks them to , most music is written by unknown people who just sell it to agencies .
If this is what you want to do then get the words you want to include and voice them in the way you want them to be said , then just use music to beef up the song and add a rhythm .
