Optical mice require very little cleaning. Personally I clean mine once every couple of months simply by wiping the top and bottom surface with a wet cleaning cloth.

I actually clean my mouse pad much more often since that's where I get some dirt accumulation that cause resistance in moving the mouse.

Yep, just not as often by far.

The scroll wheel may need to be cleaned of gunk if you use it a lot.
The seam along the side.
The bottom of it will pick up stuff over time.
The indent where the LED is may get hair and stuff in there.

Compared to keyboards and old ball mice... the optical mouse is practically maintenance free.

Wouldnt hurt to wipe it off...and wipe your desk off for better precision and speed.
