Hello. My family is moving to Mentor and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what surrounding areas have good school systems. Also, is it better to buy a condo in Mentor area because of all the snow?

Are you actually moving to Mentor, or are you looking for a nearby city and then you will work in Mentor?

Perry has an incredible reputation because of the high tech facilities there. It was the envy of many for a while, but the publicity about it has died down a bit.

Stay out of Cleveland. It is the poorest big city in the country. Not good schools at all.

Elyria is ok, but has gone downhill a bit. Medina county has schools that are rated as excellent and have been for a couple years now. You may want to consider that if you are up for a little commute to work.

The snow has nothing to do with having a condo; I mean there are tons of people who live in houses despite all of the snow. Shoveling snow is not that bad and does not need done incredibly often. It is just when it is a heavy snow (many inches) that you may need help. I keep the number of a plowing company on my fridge. If the snow is very bad then I pay someone $20.00 to come with their plow and take care of my drive. Other than that I go out with my kids and shovel or we also have a snow blower.

I lived in Lake County near Mentor for 15 years. Loved it, snow and all and still miss living there. Schools in the area are very good, including Mentor City Schools. Mentor HS is very large but has a good reputation. Lake Catholic HS is also in Mentor, another excellent school. Perry HS is one of the premiere school systems in the state. There is a nuclear plant there, and the taxes fund a state of the art school and facilities. Next to Perry is Painesville Riverside HS, also great, and even further east is Madison where I taught at the high school for 10 years. As for the snow, the county and townships are extremely good at clearing the roads. You will not need a condo for that because there are tons of private companies that you can hire as you would a lawn service, or you might find a neighbor with a snow plow. It is just a wonderful place to live with lots to do.

There are some really good school in that area. Kirtland is a small country style school. Mentor its self has a good school system. There is also Willoughby, but I don't know too much about that school. I'm thinking I would favor Kirtland and Mentor over Willoughby. I would NOT even think about Painesville. As for the snow, you don't have to get a condo because of the snow. If you are worried about that maybe try to find a house with a shorter driveway or get a snow blower. I lived in the area for a while so if you have any further questions feel free to email me..
