Haha,
I like how people are getting mad at the asker using "Thats your opinion" as their support. The asker does state, " I hate rap music."
To answer the question...I'm not much of a rap listener either. Today, there isnt any more good rap. Its all this Lil' Jon crap. I used to be into rap and my friend is still deeply into rap...and he admits, rap is very dry right now.
So, with that said...although we dont listen to rap...I think we still need to respect it. If we respect music, we will respect rap. Rap has alot of beautiful elements...but for now, those elements arn't in Mainsteam rap songs. If you dug deeper (like my friend) you will find some rap with true meaning.

I understand why you feel this way & i am a rap fan. The vast majority of rap right now is so negative & sexist that it's very hard to defend it. But there are some acts that are positive & do the right thing. Most are underground (Masta Ace, Talib Kwali, Common) so they wont get played.
But the bigger picture is that record comanies dont care if rappers shoot each other or disrespect women. They look at them as ignorant buffons anyway so thay let them act the part just so they can get money. The rappers dont help the situation any better with these videos where they are throwing money in the air & degrading women. There is a reason this is being played & it is because people buy this crap.
But there is garbage in almost every form of music. It's just unfortanate that the vast majority of it comes from rap. There is a point to rap right now, it's just major ignorance & destruction to the black community.

Rap is just another musical genre that allows it's artists an outlet to express themselves in their own creative way. For it's listeners, it allows them to be entertained by something that they find entertaining. Rap is no different, in it's concept, than Country, Rock, R&B, Alternerative, etc. Every musician strives to create a piece that they can express themselves through, while hopefully entertaining his or her particular audience. Throughout all genres there are great pieces, good pieces, OK pieces, and junk.
Obviously not everyone is going to like every type of music that is produced. Not everyone likes lima beans, but those that do, eat them. Most people feel a connection to their particular choice or choices of music: that connection could be motivational, religous, inner expression, etc. No person should be questioned for their particular musical likes/dislikes, they should just be allowed to listen, enjoy, and let the music move them.

After long and sometimes loud debates with many people, I have been persuaded that rap is, for the most part, poetry, set to a beat and sometimes simple music. Personally, I've never enjoyed rap because of the repetition and the overly simple backbeats, bass lines, and occassional melodies, but sometimes the poetry involved is very deep and sometimes touching.
The above EXCLUDES rap in which there's excessive yelling, excessive talk about killing for no reason, and excessive talk about how "cool" or rich they are. And I do have to say that backup rappers are completely useless.

first off all wierd al is NOT a hip hop artist and another thing, you say it pointless, well the same could be said about all different kinds of music, there are plenty of rock song that are pointless. and i would stop hating with such a passion its not good for you especially when hip hop is here to stay whether you like it or not. In all genres of music they make songs that are pointless and then they make songs with a meaning something that people can relate to. and for all the people who say C-rap i could simply say that rock is C-rock as in crock of bullshit!

There is such a thing as worthwhile hip-hop. You just can't find it at your usual outlets. For proof check out three instances: A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, or Atmosphere. There are many many more, but you won't hear them on the radio or MTV. You shouldn't dismiss a genre because of who is popular. There are horrible musicians in every style of music. And most of them are on the video and radio stations.

YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO FEEL ANY WAY YOU WANT TO, BUT DIFFERENT PEOPLE TAKE DIFFERENTLY TO DIFFERENT KINDS OF MUSIC, BECAUSE WHAT KIND OF WORLD WOULD IT BE IF ALL MUSIC WAS THE SAME. I MEAN THINK ABOUT THE QUESTION YOU ASKED BECAUSE IN THE END EVERYONE HAS TO MAKE THEIR MONEY ONE WAY OR ANOTHER AND MANY PEOPLE EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN DIFFERENT WAYS. A LOT OF RAPPERS ARE ACTUALLY POETS FOR EXAMPLE TUPAC WAS A POET(OH AND WEIRD AL IS NOT A RAPPER!!!)
