My computer has been restarting periodically for unknown reasons for a while now. I recently had my hard drive, motherboard, sound card replaced. The computer repair shop owner said that the only thing he hasn't ruled out is my P4 processor i got put in about 8mo ago. He said it is very unlikely that is the cause, but there is nothing left to check. He has been benchmarking it for days now and says that sometimes it will go 48hrs without restarting, other times it will happen 2x in 10min. What could go wrong with my processor that might be causing this? He said that if this isn't the problem then he honestly won't know what is wrong. I would hate this to happen :( If anyone has any advise please help! Thank you and God Bless.

The problem goes to your power supply. If your hardware have no problems, probably the power supply have some problem but i can't make sure what actually happen in your case. Anyway, i agree with answerer 1's. She answered what i want to say actually.

I think i would agree with some of the others...

that fact that you have been to a shop then i presume there is not a build up of dust in the machine that could be over heating anything... even though if this was the case i think the maching would shut down for a short while as the item cooled and i think even then you would have restart manually....

You havn't said that he replaced the power supply.. check the amount of power the new devices use and check the wattage that the supply is designed to supply on a continuous bases... if you are placing a large demand on a power supply it will evetually fail ( not just the new devices but the cooling fans aswell)... does it get hot? is it plugged in securely to the board im sure that has already been checked by the shop..most modern boards come with temp sensor built in to the board, all you have to do is either look in the bios or go to the makers site and search for temperature software that you can install, you can then run the computer as normal whilst monitoring the temperatures on your board aswell as processor temp.

check to see if the power supply goes off and on aswell as the computer restarting.. you may have a duff board... aslong as all the drivers are installed correctly that came with the board and udate as necessary.

check the settings are correct for that p4 as well as the correct cooling solution. modern board will autodetect voltage etc but just check to make sure.. if you cant check voltage levels in the bios then you a temperature monitoring software that usually monitors voltage aswell. I installed a good one for free on a friends computer but as usual i cant remember the name sorry.. something like dashboard5 or something.

good luck

I'm assuming that he switched out the power supply as well? If he has, I had an issue with my bios a while ago where the PC was over clocked and other changes were made .... not sure how the setting changed. (must have been my husband) Anyhow after making some adjustments and actually resetting the bios our computer was fixed.
Perhaps that will help. I have read that resetting the bios can cause major issues sometimes, so good luck!
:o)

There may be many reasons for this problem. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
