I am approaching 30 and I still really haven't got a clear idea of what career my aptitudes, abilities and personality would be best suited to. Where would be a good place to start?( i.e. who or what should I go to, to help me discover this)

Try a college, they may be able give you advice on where to go. Possibly the Job Centre.

When I first came out of college, I was completely lost. The best place to start is going to a career services office at your college. If not, then sometimes, going to a job agency can help you a lot. Just tell the recruiter what type of things interest you, and they can guide you to the type of positions you might like. The best thing you can do is do temp jobs for a little while, just so that you don't have to "commit" to something if you find you don't like it. If you do like it, then you can start looking for similar positions as full time opportunities!

I still have a vague idea of what I want, but sometimes, you only learn what you want by trying new things.

An excellent book to read is "what colour is your parachute". In side the book are plenty of practical tools which help you to determine what are your transferrable skills, what are your passions etc. He then goes on to explain what are the best techniques for finding the job which suits you best. It used to be reprinted and updated every year, but it would appear that the last edition of it was published in 2002. Still, there is over 30 years of experience in the book, and I would suggest it is a good place to start.

Hope that helps.

How about dropping in at a careers counselling session at the open university.
The BBC would be an excellent place to start. I found just making an appointment and dropping in at any of the regional offices really helpful.

you can try going to online aptitude tests like tickle.com that ask questions about your character and personality and then at the end tells you what job you would be most suited for or you can think about the kind of business you yourself would create then find something similar to it all ready in operation and then try to join that organisation as it is something that interests you and you can learn about it and in due time you can start your own business.

Try getting in contact with your local Learn Direct centre (if you live in England) and they should be able to give you career advice.
