(10/26/06 - LAWRENCEVILLE, GA) - An immigrant from Africa has gone on trial on charges alleging he circumcised his 2-year-old daughter with a pair of scissors to avoid bringing shame on his family.

It appears to be a groundbreaking prosecution for a case of female genital mutilation in the U.S., said Taina Bien-Aime, executive director of Equality Now, a New York-based human rights group that focuses on violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world.

Khalid Adem could face 40 years in prison if convicted in Gwinnett County on the charges of aggravated battery and cruelty to children.

Prosecutor Marty First acknowledged that Adem, who was born in Ethiopia, is from a culture that practices female circumcision.

"But circumcision is just a nice way of saying mutilation," First told the jury in his opening statement Tuesday. "There is no doubt that she was mutilated. And this is not something you go to a doctor and do because no doctor will do it. He did this to his own baby."

The practice, a tradition in some African cultures, is widely condemned by human rights groups and has been outlawed in the United States since 1997.

Police have said that Adem used scissors to circumcise his daughter in their Duluth apartment in 2001. The child's mother said she didn't discover it until more than a year later.

"He did not do that. He never wanted it to happen," defense attorney W. Mark Hill told the jury. "He will tell you that. And that only leaves two people. The people who were primarily taking care of the child. The mother and the grandmother."

First said the girl told Gwinnett County authorities that her father cut her. The prosecutor quoted Adem as saying in late 2002 and early 2003 that if the girl were not circumcised, "it will be a shame to the family."

"He said he wanted (the girl) to have it done so that she will not be promiscuous," First added. He also said Adem implied he had already circumcised the girl.

Hill denied Adem ever made any of those statements and asked how the victim's mother could not have known for more than a year that the girl was circumcised.

Hill said Fortunate Adem's allegations stem from a nasty divorce and a custody battle over the girl.

Female Genital Mutulation happens all over the world in any place where Africans have migrated. It is a horrible practice where the girl age 4to 8 has the clitoris gouged out of her body so that she will not ever enjoy sexual pleasure. It is singly the most disgusting and bizarre ritual that women the world over have had to endure at the hands of men. This is not just happening in the wilds by uneducated men no this is happening in places like London, NYC, Paris and all over in other parts of the world. Educated people the world over should rise up and say NO MORE for the sake of the children spared this torture.

you could extremely attempt, yet you will need greater data then the undeniable fact that he has family contributors residing out of state to persuade a decide that he's a 'flight risk'. I propose which you hire an lawyer, you're searching for for a courtroom date and a courtroom order in below 3 days, no longer very probable, particularly without custody or visitation order from the courts.

Circumcision across the board should be banned.Imagine if male circumcisions were never heard of before and somebody decided to mutilate their kids penis for cosmetic purposes or because it's normal where they come from. We'd put them in jail also for doing that to a poor defenseless baby. What's really sad is all the people who won't agree with me because we do it.Seems things we do are fine ? It's like the foods we eat can be seen as bizarre by other cultures and we equally find their foods sometimes to be bizarre.Hacking off parts of infants sexual organs is WRONG across the board.

Contrary to popular opinion, ALL CIRCUMCISION IS MUTILATION! Just because the Puritan Christian practice of circumcision is somewhat accepted in this country does not make it right anymore that female circumcision in Africa. It is all designed to the same end, to prevent promiscuity. Period. If anyone bothers to look at the history of circumcision, they will find this to be true. Cleanliness is an EXCUSE that was made up after the fact to justify a horrible, barbaric practice.

Not only should that family face prosecution for violating US law, all circumcision should be outlawed in this country except for medical need. And again, if you actually looked up facts and medical history, you will find that the actual medical need is microscopic.

Stop the mutilation of our children now. ALL mutilation!

I am glad you posted this.

Female mutilation is very common in several Middle Eastern and African countries. It is important to raise awareness of the cruelty involved.

Thanks

Yes, I've heard about this, too much probably (I'm in Atlanta.)

Some countries practice female circumcision - it just sounds strange in the U.S. because we don't practice it here. Some cultures do it because they don't want their women to grow up to be promiscuous. So with circumcision, they can't enjoy relations.

I'm sure there's things Americans do that other cultures think it absurd.

Of course I don't agree with what the father did, but I think everyone should understand his reasoning - it wasn't just some random act - his culture practices it everyday.

there is no way that the mother could not have known! I am a mother and I know every inch of my kids, come on you change her diaper every day and you can't see something is wrong? I believe the father! i think the mother and/ grandmother did it and the dad didn't know. most of the fathers in that culture don't change diapers or gives kids baths or anything such as this so he would not have known!

I have heard of it in Africa, but we have laws against such horrors in the US; it all goes back to the immigration issues; come to the US, but do it legally and obey all laws once here
