I am sorry but your husband is correct. The basic premise of perpetual motion is for a device to, create more energy than it consumes, and it is possible yet you will find that the US Patient Office will not grant you a patient. But if you want to really stifle him, tell him to create energy, with out creating heat. If you can do that, you will be rich.

There seems to be an awful lot of confusion about this. People seem to have misread your question and people do not really understand Physics very well.
I think that your husband is WRONG and the people he has heard are RIGHT - there can be no such thing as a perpetual motion machine.
The main reason for this is Entropy, the degree of disorder present in any system. Put simply, Heat Energy is the most useless form of energy there is because it is essentially random motion of molecules. All other energy forms (sound energy, electrical energy, chemical energy, kinetic energy, etc) will eventually degrade into heat energy. Once this happens no ordered motion of any kind will be possible and the universe will be a dull place indeed. According to the laws of Thermodynamics any phase of any machine will necessitate at least some transfer of some form of energy to heat energy. So, eventually, all the 'useful' energy will eventually dissipate.
Hope that this is reasonably clear!

For a very long time, the idea of perpetual motion has been investigated by scientists the world over. Current convention has it that perpetual motion cannot occur, however, an advertisement was placed in "The Economist" recently, inviting eminent research types to verify some "behind closed doors" type research, that has apparantly acheived perpetual motion...
Either this is a big scam, or we are about to witness a scientific/ technological revolution that will make the internet look like the kids toy we all use it for here!
It's a case of "watch this space"!

It breaks the laws of thermodynamics. You can not get more energy out of a closed system than you put in, and ultimately, that is what PM is trying to do.
Explain it to your husband thusly; Imagine a bloke in the pub tried to sell you a magic pint glass that, if you put a pint of beer in, would pour out a gallon. You would not fall for it, even if he then showed you a complex diagram of tubes and valves that were supposed to be inside the glass, because you know that a pint glass can not hold more than a pint. Replace the beer with energy, and that is what PM claims.

Why cant perpectual motion be achieved. (husbands eh!)? (just did a quick spell check for you pet.) perpetual, perpetually, perfectly, punctual. Just choose one and off you go.

ok, youre probly going to hate me for this, but im going to give you the simplest answer possible. in order to have perpetual motion, you must have, in esence (sp?), unending fuel for that motion. no moving thing, be it a motor or anything that moves, can do that without having power (fuel) to run. since you have to keep giving power to what it is powering, it ceases being perpetual, becos perpetual means it runs itself, basically. btw, im no scientist or anything, ive just looked up info on the net and im using a little learned logic. anyway. no perpetual motion machine, nor perpetual motion itself can be acheived becos everything needs added (more) energy to run. nothing on this planet can be self sustaining, period. you simply wont find anything out there that can run itself, forever. tell this to your husband and if he insists on his answer, tell him to prove it to you, litterally. i have a feeling after a bit of exhaustive research he will give up. hope this helps.

You can tell him that the earth's rotation is slowing down - even the solar system is not perpetual although there is next to no friction to slow it down.
It is the drag from the moon that slows down the rotation of the earth.

well friction is one of the main restrictions, any moving parts will be slowed down by friction until they stop.
It is possible to get systems with very low friction in systems like pendulums (which can swing for hours or days) etc but there are currently no materials or methods which can avoid it completely(that I know of).

if he finds a way of doing it then he'll become very rich! unfortunately, the laws of physics as we currently know them do not allow for a perpetual motion machine.
