For lovely and quiet beaches which offer snorkeling and a whole range of water sports, inexpensive boarding and lodging, hospitable and friendly locals who can converse in fluent English/Spanish, it is hard to beat Panama. Please visit :

...Safety ? You will be a lot more safer than you could ever be in any metro, city, or town in the United States !

Been there for Christmas, New Years, and all other holidays that we have in the United States along with all of their holidays. Panama is a pretty safe place to go. I have never had any problems when I have been there. I feel very safe when I am there, even walking the streets downtown.

Many of times I have even feel asleep downtown at the bus station before it moved to the mall area.

In general, it is safe, with some exceptions:
- Do not walk in the city of Colón any time of the day
- Do not walk in downtown Panama City at night
- There is a risk of yellow fever and drug-related crime in Darién gap (east of Yaviza), though some people made it there as well and enjoyed it.

Otherwise, it is a marvellous place and you should have no problem getting around by very cheap local buses and staying in local hotels at about $7 a night or even less. Panama is a great place to go!! Use your common sense... I'm sure there are parts of Los Angeles, New York and even Montana you would be careful in. So, go, have fun, but use wisdom in any place or country you visit.

P.S. Panama is more developed than most countries in Central and South America. Enjoy!

Panama is the safest country in Centralamerica. It is also the most beautiful. I suggest you go see the Canal of course and the Spanish fortress(Panama la Vieja) that was destroyed by the Scottish Pirate Henry Morgan. Good luck and have fun.
