The Iraq portion of Kurdistan could be given back to the Kurdish people. The Shiite portion could be given to Iran (Yes,I know, but they are going to wind up with it sooner or later anyhow). The Sunnis could have their own area in and around Baghdad.
Perhaps even a Palestian area, with a few oil wells, could be established there. This is what the Brits could, should, and would have done in the first place if they had used a little common sense when they colonized the area. Now it is up to the US to clean up the mess they started.

Parts of what should be Kurdistan are in Turkey & Iran. This should have been established as 1 country from the git-go. However it's to late now as Turkey & Iran would not agree to this. In theory, I agree with you 100%, my main concern would be for the Kurds.

This is a logical solution to the Iraq mess that has been created, IF a few caveats are in place.
1.) Iran would definitely inherit, by force of presence, the Shite section of the country. It would be up to them to clamp down on the madras' and Islamic Jihad cellls sure to spring up. To not do so would make them the culpable party in any military sanctioned action.
2.) The Sunnis need more land to the south and include Bahgdad in the equation. This would be a fair distribution of resources between the Shite and Sunni groups.
3.) The Kurds would need to be reigned in but could serve as the launching pad for a viable democratic government within the current boundaries of Iraq if civic organization can occur.
Even if these caveats are met, the possibility that Iraq will disintergrate into sectarian civil war remains exceedingly high and it would serve American policy (contrary to current white House W.P.) to begin a phased withdrawal.

You have a point,
I think to achieve lasting peace we should also carve up Uk and divide that into Ireland, England, scotland and wales,
The Us should also be carved into 52 smaller countries,
So no more Devils and Satans are born or cultivated.
and to all you pro war fanatics out there,
I hope yopu have learnt your lessons and Understood what a great job Saddam Hussain was doing keeping his country united and a soveriegn nation.
Something that The US with its high and mighty force could not achieve.
Adios

What is wrong with you people? Do you wish to separate families who live in different parts of Iraq? Iraq was very a very good country until it was illegally invaded by the US. We have co-existed with each other for centuries. You must understand we are all Iraqis first ,than Kurds,Sunnis and shias. You must GET OUT OF IRAQ and let us solve our own differences. Your presence is creating more divisions within the country than ever before. You people are fueling this sectarian violence. We are wise to your divide and rule policy. We will resist the division of our country with all we can. Why cant you get into your thick heads we don't need your help or support. We don't want your ways of life. If you don't want us as your friends than at least don't push us into becoming your enemies(you have enough enemies already). Just GET OUT OF IRAQ.

Only if you agree that Arabs invade America and divide it into countries. The Spanish speaking could take new Mexico, Florida and Nevada. Arabs take Michigan and Ohio. Irish make a republic of their own in California. Yes, and Jews could have New york and solve the Palestine issue for ever, and so on.

I could see them being partitioned along sectarian lines into the equivalent of our states and having equal representation through an Iraqi Congress.

I think they would be foolish to break into independent countries, because individually they would be very small and at risk from neighboring countries. There is strength in their current size.

The idea of spliting Iraq into 3 states is a good one.

Sectarian violence in Iraq has killed thousands, and many of the people can't forget the past, and are looking for revenge.

3 states would seperate them, and may provide a true peace the people of Iraq long for.

Why stop at three? I'd like to partition Iraq into about 30 million pieces......

That is something that the Iraqis should decide themselves. Its their country, not ours. When are we all going to start acting like it?

Partition didn't work when Britain did it in Israel, and partition won't work if Britain does it in Iraq.

The only way partition will work in Iraq is if the Iraqi people decide to do it themselves.
