Wow...you expect me to define a total culture in a few
easy words? What a challenge?

Okay.

A Redneck is a person who drives a crummy pickup truck with a deer rifle in the back window, missing one hub cap, and has one head light that is burned out. Head gear for Rednecks usually consists of a baseball cap with greasy finger prints on the bill of the cap. Their standard dress is soiled blue jeans with one or more holes in them possibly zipped up, and a check flannel shirt flapping loose at the bottom, usually misbuttoned at the second botton hole, equipped with a crushed pack of Marlboro cigarettes in the shirt pocket. Hiking boots, with or without socks, are normal the footwear. Rednecks vote Democratic and never hang around to long at the Polls bacause their beer is getting warm in the back of the pickup truck. You should have no trouble identifying a Redneck home because it is one of those trailers with the rusty hubcap nailed over a hole in the outside wall, and the front door torn halfway off. Rednecks tend to congregate on Interstate 20 between Atlanta and Birmingham where their trucks have broken down, had flat tires, or overheated due to the rotten ruber hoses. During emergencies such as those Rednecks always help each other by popping a top and holding long discussions on the Ford versus Chevy controversy.

Naomi you have asked a legitimate question and I will try to give you a legitimate answer. I assume by "true" you want to know the actual meaning of the word rather than stereotypes.

The word "redneck" originated in the rural south where white farmers who labored in the hot sun received dark tans on the only part of their body exposed to the sun which was their neck. I personally believe there was another contributor to the "red" neck and that was the "red" sandy soil in which many of them including my ancestors worked. The combination of sun and red soil produced a really "red" neck.

Since these people were largely uneducated the term "redneck" grew to mean and white person......normally male.........from the rural south who has little education and is considered otherwise backward.

I really don't know how to view the use of "redneck" these days. Some people wear it with pride within their community much the way many black people wear the N word. That is a "redneck" can call another a "redneck" and get away with like a black person can call someone the N word and get away with. But outsiders can not use either term without sparking a fight. It seems if you don't "get it" then you need not ask why that is.

My dilemma is that people use "redneck" liberally but would never call someone the N word. To illustrate my point I can not even write out the N word but I can write out "redneck" although both words are meant to be derogatory and are an attempt at defamation.

I hope this helps some. And thanks again for asking a very intelligent question. I hope I have given you an equally intelligent answer.

Somoene who works outside a lot so he has a permanent sunburn on his neck and throat. The bad rep comes from being uneducated because of being too busy and tired to read or socialize, from all that hard work in the sun.
