my 11 year old son wants to do this when he leaves school is there anything i can do now that will help him achieve this

Buy him some junior books on photography so he can learn how to see a good composition through the lens, learn about light and shade and what makes a good subject.
Then buy him a small digital camera to start off with - hopefully you will be able to download all his pictures to your PC and he can learn to study them, discard those he doesn't like and make a photographic filing cabinet on CD.
Kids are so lucky these days, we paid a fortune for 12 exp films and then another fortune to have them developed and that was with a Kodak Bantom Coloursnap camera I bought second hand in 1958!
Perhaps he could join a junior photographic club, and you could think about buying him a subscription to a photographic magazine. Nothing like seeing good stuff and information about competitions and exhibitions.

My advice is to let them have a camera on them most of the time, as a photo opportunity could be lurking anywhere any-when.
Experiment with the camera and how to take pictures, don't just find "pretty-looking" subjects to take pictures of, for instance try taking pictures of the day-to day things, but in an unusual way.
Inspiration doesn't just have to arrive from other photographs.
Make some form of portfolio (digital or otherwise) and get feedback from it (tutors is a good start).
Being the family photographer helps too!!!

It's really much more about talent than Qualifications, You can be taught the basics but everything is pretty much self taught, Trial and Error. The Key really is to practice, practice, practice.
With the Industry as it is at the moment I'd strongly suggest you guide him towards Photoshop packages for the PC this will really open his eyes to what can be acheived after you have taken the Photographs.

No idea. you probably do need some *spark* to set you apart such as a degree in photography. talent. no idea. good portfolio? it might be the case that employers only take on photographers with a degree. probably won't need anything like that if you're self employed but you'll need to know what you're doing, who to speak to. So yeah maybe education in the subject would be beneficial.

Becoming top class photographer u don’t need any degree u need vision ur interest and experince.
if he has some interest just buy a good digital cam for him

you should buy a camera for him doesn't matter what kind but make him take pictures and see which ones he likes. or take pictures of wildlife interesting things, i myself enjoy some photography
