An excellent question. When I lived in Belfast (after 9-11), a New York congresswoman visited and called the IRA freedom fighters - it was this sort of thinking which won people's sympathy. The IRA loved to compare themselves to Nelson Mandela, but South African blacks could not vote and the Northern Irish nationalists could - after 1973 gerrymandering was swept away and they only lost elections because they were in the minority, not because the system was still rigged.

The IRA is basically an old comrades' association now and Americans' foolish support for them isn't really a current issue. But now that America knows what it's like to be a victim of terrorism, maybe Hartford, Conn. will excise the name of IRA gun-runner Bobby Sands from their disgraceful public park.

Thankfully the situation in Ireland seems to be sorting itself out. It is an absolutely fantastic place. I have spent several memorable holidays there. It makes me wonder, now that the Patriot Act is in force, and it is illegal in the USA to support any terrorist organisation, whether the support for the IRA has dwindled to such an extent that they decided the only alternative was "diplomacy". Whatever the reason, the result is a more peaceful era. In the past however the IRA has raised vast sums in America to fight it"s terrorist war against the United Kingdom, and it did seem hypocritical of the Americans to support them whilst condemning terrorism elsewhere.

People in the US supported the IRA because they saw their fight as a legitimate one. Not too many years ago the Brits were kicked out of the US (by terrorists).

People have a right to fight an occupying force. The struggle for Irish Freedom has now reached a stage where politics has taken centre stage.

People seem to forget. Catholics were treated as second class citizens in their own country. Unionists talk about democracy and the rule of law. All right and proper! But since the partition of Ireland and the creation of a sectarian rule statlet (one party rule) democracy did not exist.

So when the catholic (and many protestants) came together to form the Civil Rights Movement they were beat into the ground. What would you have done? Would you allow yourself to be treated as a second class citizen and when you dared ask for equality are beaten for daring to ask to be treated the same!

The IRA came into being as a result of the situation. Catholic areas were attacked by loyalist mobs backed up by the RUC and B Specials. There was no IRA then. So because the IRA fought against the Brits (the Status Quo) who occupy the Six Counties they are therefore preceived as terrorists because they are trying to remove the Status Quo, which to the Irish is illegitimate.

Not only did they have to fight the Brits, but also the loyalist death squads backed and armed by the same Brits. So don't you consider the loyalists as terrorists. Or do you see them as defending democracy? Then again, what democracy?

Yanks didn't support the IRA, Irish imigrants did. The American polpulus has always supported the Brits. The US government was powerless to stop the cash flow to the IRA until the Patriot Act was signed.
