No. The 22ND Amendment states that no person can serve more than 2 terms as president. In the case of the line of succession (i.e. President resigns, dies, etc) if the person succeeding the previous president serves more than 2 years of his predecessor's term then he can only run once more. If he serves less than 2 years then he could run twice more, but would still only have been elected to 2 terms.

willys56cj5: I answered your question when someone asked about the possibility of Bill Clinton running with Hillary. While technically not a violation of the 22ND Amendment it would violate the spirit in which it was written and would be subject to a strict constitutional challenge. I firmly believe that if this were tried it would be challenged in the Supreme Court before the election could take place. While I don't think this scenario would ever happen, it would be interesting to see how the 9 wise people would rule on it.

No, only two terms. But suppose a president ran for the House and won and became Speaker of the House and, God forbid, something terrible happened to those at the top. Currently this is the line:
The Vice President
Speaker of the House
President pro tempore of the Senate
Secretary of State
Secretary of the Treasury
Secretary of Defense
Attorney General
Secretary of the Interior
Secretary of Agriculture
Secretary of Commerce
Secretary of Labor
Secretary of Health and Human Services
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
Secretary of Transportation
Secretary of Energy
Secretary of Education
Secretary of Veterans Affairs
Secretary of Homeland Security

Sorry to add a question to a question! I think because they were not elected to the office of president, they could serve again. But I'm not a constitutional lawyer so I don't know for sure. But I do know Clinton, for example or George W Bush can't run again.

U.S. Constitution - Amendment 22
Amendment 22 - Presidential Term Limits
1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

a president that served two terms can run for office again, just not as president. nothing preventing him from running as a governor or senator. I think there are a couple of examples of that happening, but I'm too lazy to do the research right now!

No! Here's a neat scenario though...

President Bush, ineligible to run for the office of the presidency again, is actually compelled to join as someone's running mate and becomes vice-president. The president, later on, has a massive heart-attack and dies. Can Vice President Bush be sworn in as interim President until the next election?

No. Only for two terms. And he cannot run for political office at all after he has been president.

No read the 25th amendment to the constitution. Two terms and two terms only. Unless a VP succeeds to the presidency after the two year mark of his predecessor and then he can actually serve 2 and a half terms.

No - you can not run as it is prohibited by Federal Law.

And by the same token - Bill Clinton could not even run as "Vice President" of the United States since he has served two terms, when circumstances could possibly "put" him into the Presidents seat such as the death of the President would do! -

This can only be changed by Congress.

It is my understanding that after two terms a President can never again run for President.
