when i try to use search facility it tells me something is missing and i may need to run setup. When i try and run setup it tells me to go to control panel to install and configure system components.

I dont have any original discs with this computer and this is an ongoing part of my previous problems on my other questions concerning loss of system restore and defrag

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

hi bev,
you may need hands-on help from someone more familiar with computers than you, but let's see what may be happening here....
If you look at this link to microsoft's problem database:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319949
you'll see that this is a known problem and seems to happen when you connect to some websites or even your ISP (service provider).
I'd just focus on fixing this bit, without getting deeper into trouble with defrag, etc. And of the methods they suggest, probably Method 1 (install SP1) is the best way as it has the potential to fix up all the problems you are having, without your needing the Windows XP disks. Couple of gotchas though:

1. SP1 is no longer available on the Microsoft website and you will have to get it elsewhere, like maybe this site:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/winxpsp1.html
(Just follow the instructions - but again, if you have a friend who is a bit familiar with this stuff, enlist his/her help - 14 year old computer savvy kids highly recommended!)
To make sure it's a safe site I started to download it and all looks okay.

2. SP1 is a humongous download - try it only if u r on a broadband connection to the net. Otherwise you really do need to ask for help from someone who can load it on for you.

Once you get SP1 on, your XP Search Companion facility will hopefully work. Let's review then - Post another question if reqd. Hope this helps. I'll email you my contact (email) info if you want some further suggestions/help.
good luck and stay cool. - this stuff can be maddening at times.
ish.

Search then internet for the driver for your particular device. You should be able to download and install it, or browse to the file from the Hardware setup dialog. Email me if you need more assistance.
