Given the scientific enlightenment of our age, can anyone conceivably still believe in ghosts without thinking that it's merely a lot of superstition?

BOO!
I believe that there are electronic forces that cause us to experience ghost like phenomenon. That is why EMF is contributed to the phenomenon. I don't think high electromagnetic readings indicate that a ghost is in the area, but it may cause the brain to experience ghost like phenomenon.

Phenomenon.... just wanted to type it one last time!

Funnily enough, until a few days ago I would've said no.

I was flicking through channels on the TV and stopped on an old black and white film. I was thinking about how these images had been captured for maybe forever. The film relied on chemistry and light to achieve this.

Then I got to thinking about how ghosts could be the result of a similar reaction through some natural and as yet unknown process. I admit it's unlikely but I said the same about the world being round.

Also, Physicists are taking alternative dimensions seriously. It seems to be the only way to explain what led up to the Big Bang. Many are discussing the plausibility of alternate realities, ie where we create a new dimension everytime we make a choice, based on the erratic action of photons (? Not too sure on the specifics). It's enough to make you think.

But I also accept that many ghosts are caused by infrasonic vibrations, sounds below the level of our consciousness, such as sewers and faulty fans. Some of these vibrations can cause our mind's eye to have hallucinations and even feel 'someone walking beside us'.

And there's nothing wrong with superstition. It's fun and creative. Our religions are full of it.

Yes, I do as I have had several 'ghostly' experiences, and have actually seen 2 on separate occasions.
Now, before you come to the conclusion that I am some floaty airhead I can assure you that my feet are firmly planted on the ground and my friends would confirm that I am a very sensible, level-headed and reliable person.
But I know that I have seen a man playing the violin next to my friend - and I heard him as well! I have also seen a man walk across the hotel room I was staying in - in from one wall, and out through another. When I checked the next day it did use to be a corridor - the floor layout had been changed.
Can I explain ghosts? No I can't. But I most certainly believe in them and some other psychic phenomena.

Without sounding like a crackpot, I think that it is possible that after somebody dies and their energy disperses (literally the energy that kept their body functioning) that if a person ran into enough of that energy converged in a single spot that they might well get the feeling of another in their presence. I have never seen a ghost. I don't think I can agree or disagree in their existence. Want to talk about superstition though? Let's talk about God!

Just because something cannot be measured using technology available today does not mean it does not exist. Bacteria could not be seen before the microscope. Perhaps ghosts, or whatever they are, will be measured by some scientific instrument in the future. You have to keep an open mind.

Part of reason we believe in them is due to 'scientific enlightenment'. What better way to deal with the harsh reality of technology than to create a more less physicall danger.

Besides, you could ask the same about God. Given our current human development, why would someone believe in God? After all, we now know how lightnings are made... yest, majority still do.

Yes I think so.
I believe I have seen a ghost and my mother does too. The real question would be, "Does anybody know what ghosts are?"
I personally don't believe that they are the lingering spirits of the dead but some kind of natural energy that we unwittingly imprint with the image of lost loved ones

i do, and have always believed in ghosts. i don't like to call them ghosts, though. i have had a few very close friends and family that have passed away, and some of the stuff that happened and sometimes still happens, has to be them !! i like to believe that every once in a while they give me a sign that they are right here next to me and looking out for me.

There are no ghosts. These have been created by Human mind to personify the fear of the unknown. I do not believe in ghosts. There is no scientific basis for these beliefs.
