In Islam both are forbidden.
Men and women are commanded to lower our gaze and to stay away from anything forbidden. Watching porn can also lead to many other forbidden actions such as maturbation.
As for masturbation...
"And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts). Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, - for them, they are free from blame. But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors." 23.5-7 Here the verses are clear in forbidding all illegal sexual acts (including masturbation) except for the wives or that their right hand possess. And whoever seeks beyond that is the transgressor.
"And let those who find not the financial means for marriage keep themselves chaste, until Allah enriches them of His bounty." 24.33. This verse also clearly orders whoever does not have the financial means to marry to keep himself chaste and be patient in facing temptations (including masturbation) until Allah enriches them of His bounty.
Secondly, from the sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him):
Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood said, "We were with the Prophet while we were young and had no wealth whatsoever. So Allaah’s Messenger said, "O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty (i.e. his private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power." Bukhari:5066. The hadeeth orders men who are not able to marry to fast despite the hardship encountered in doing so, and not to masturbate despite the ease with which it can be done.

I can't speak for Islam but christianity follows the bible and that particular book is actually silent on the topic.
Sure, lots of christians swear that the bible says it's a sin but if you read the10 commandments you won't find masturbation listed there. Thus it is not a sin.
And if you read the OT there is a reference to spilling one's seed on the ground but that has nothing to do with masturbation nor is it a sin. In the time period and culture where that passage originates, there was a real push on to increase the population thus it was considered anti-social to waste good sperm. The context of the story was a man was to impregnate his dead borther's wife and could not go through with it. Oh, and remember that was a 'law' of man not god thus it could not be a sin.

A short lesson...
From what I know as a Catholic, both are considered a sin. Sex is a gift of marriage and is viewed as way that husbands and wives are open to the possibility of procreation. (Thus, natural family planning is practiced; not having sex when the wife fertile.)
So... pornography is sinful as the viewer is lusting after someone who is not their spouse and could lead to masterbation or adultery. ("To think it is as sinful as committing it.")
Masterbation without ending in the way that was intended (copulation) is a sin as it is not open to the possibility of new life. (I won't go into details but my priest said that it was okay as long as we "complete the act", if you know what I mean.) I hope this helps.
