The viewing statistics make it a worthwhile investment for the program makers. If it wasn't popular, for whatever reason, it would be dropped. The motivation is about making a popular TV program that is watched by millions of viewers and it has little to do with the promotion of the career of anyone, other than the three presenters of the show.

As far as the entertainers are concerned, if they were any good, they wouldn't need to go on the X-Factor, as they would already have a queue of promoters a mile long throwing money at them. The honest title of the program would be 'People trying to sing who don't have the X-Factor'. The not having is the reason they don't endure.

Yes I agree its crap as are so many other reality shows, a great way of tv companies, phone companies and of course the judges to make some instant money. The judges etc are only interested in acts they feel will get them the most amount of money intially, (looks come before talent) they don't care what happens to them afterwards, the judges are laughing all the way to the bank, but I can't understand why people bother to ring up to vote in the first place, these are premium lines and though 12pence from each call may go to charity(whopee doo) by the time the judges etc are given their huge wages hardly any will go to good causes, which suckers actually ring up, I mean most of these shows are hardly regulated, so who's to say the voting isn't rigged either. Most of the acts who win are going to have a short shelf life, when will people learn?

i ask myself that same question as well. i mean the auditions are okay i suppose because it is a lot of fun watching in particular all the talentless ones who think they could sing but cannot perform badly. and when it gets to the latter stages, its so predictable in terms of the performances and people taking it so seriously, its becomes boring. and as you rightly said, the winners of pop idol, x factor longevity-wise cannot sustain a career in the music industry. well unless you're american and named kelly clarkson that is. though the reason why those x factor, pop idol and that bloke of fame academy david sneddon (remember him) don't last long is because the public realise the difference between an act who got famous through appearing on tv and being given a contract, and an act who got famous the long and hard way by not going on pop idol, x factor and those shows. the public lose interest in reality tv stars who make a couple of quid just by singing or whatever because they, particuarly you and i know, that's not the way to become a celebrity and be famous.

Because the whole process is worth it to watch those silly crazed people who genuinely think they can sing! It's mind boggling humour......... I say bring on the X factor year after year so we are all guaranteed a laugh year after year! Also, on a somewhat serious note, it is good to watch these people go on an emotional journey and come out at the other end successful. It's like all reality tv and this question "X Factor, Why????" poses a much deeper question about our british culture and that may just strike you to ask your next question.... Au revoir

So people can get famous! Its not as bad as Big Brother.
Besides, if these people really wanted to get anywhere, they would write the songs. X Factor is so they can get their stupid face on television. The only people that really strike me as still being around are Will Young and Kelly Clarkson. And Kelly's not even from Britain! Just shows how much the British Public looove reality tv.

Satellite rules.

I completely agree - unfortuantatly its the same thing with shows like Big Brother and other reality TV shows - they come up with a good idea that everyone loves at first and then just hammer it to death.

The producers need to be more orginal and start coming up with new innovative ideas instead of relying on old and now boring ones.

Get Sky TV - plenty of decent stuff there to keep anyone entertained.

Because it the money side of things at the end of the day, the amount of people who phone in every sat to keep there artist in generates a lot on pound notes thats why it keeps going on year after year.

The quality of the contestants has really gone downhill this year. Only the young kid who sings old swing songs, and one of the girls (can't remember which) are even worth listening to.

Also: I HATE LOUIS WALSH!!!!!!
