Generally a mountain will be larger, higher and have steeper slopes than a hill. There is no strict geological or geographical definition of a mountain although different places have some local laws/guides.

Within much of the United Kindom law states that anything above 2000ft in height is a mountain and is open to the 'right to roam' laws. You can camp there and so on.

In Scotland the legal height of a mountain is 3000ft.

In general 3000ft is the number I most often hear talked about for mountains but if a country has many or few mountains this will change.

You can hike over a hill in a couple of hours. A mountain would take more than a day.

Geologically speaking, a mountain is created by tectonic forces and will contain Igneous and Metamorphic rock while hills are not created by tectonic forces and usually contain sedimentary rock.
