Netscape lost ground, was bought by AOL, and then pretty much died as a proprietary (only the company has the unencrypted) code. There were a couple tries to catch up (Netscape 6 and 7) but it was too glitchy, too bloated.

But things changed - AOL let the Netscape code out as "Mozilla" and let anyone and everyone look at it. (It's called open source)

Coders looked at it. Coders played with it. Coders built from the ashes of Netscape a new browser that was still big, but better than before. Then it got bigger.

Coders rethought the idea and started from scratch - building a program that was ONLY a browser, not an e-mail program and a chat program and a web design program. Just a browser.

This little browser has knocked Internet Explorer from it's constant 90% of the market - knocked it down 11% in less than 2 years!

In the meantime, Internet Explorer didn't work on their browser for years... the last time was in 2001 (IE6).

So... losing market share, known for security holes the size of the Titanic and realizing that they hadn't done anything new in years... Internet Explorer became (essentially) a clone of the little browser.

The little browser is called Firefox, and has had over 20 million downloads in a very short amount of time (months).

I am writing this up in Firefox, and later today my mom who's nearly a senior will talk to her friends all over the world using Firefox.

Oh, and the little browser that could? It just reached version 2.0.

Come join the fun that having a choice gives you.... I think you'll like it.

(Most of this was from memory, so I may be off a little bit. The idea's the same, though)
