We have no family there. We'd like to relax, enjoy each other's company, soak in some culture and have fun. Help!

We have stayed several times in Athens and want to get out and see something different. We have a car and were considering driving somewhere - maybe mountains, ski resorts?

It has to be Athens, even though Christmas and New Year is nowhere near the same level of celebration as Easter.

Plenty going on, lots to see, decent weather if you get lucky, nice hotels to relax in, wonderful, wonderful people.

and if you get bored and want to do some easy island hopping you could pop down to Piraeus and see if you can get across to the close-by island of Aegina for a day or two.

First of all,you are not going to feel lonely in Greece.
Greek people are really nice and warm and you are going to feel like home.

Besides Athens you can visit Arahova,a town on mountain Parnassos(it is about 2,5- 3 hours far from Athens by car,but it is very nice,if you like winter sports as skiing etc.But it has a lot of people those days.Of course ,you can avoid all that people(it has a lot of clubs there) and then it can be really romantic because the nature there is magnificent.
An other place you can visit those days is Karpenissi.it is like Arahova but it is more quiet and more beautiful, especially to Plastiras lake. But it is about 4 hours far from Athens.
If you don't want to travel so far from Athens, you could stay to the capital that many happenings take place because of the Christmas and New Year Celebrations.I would also recommend you to go to an Orthodox church(there are plenty everywhere but you should go to Mitropoli in the centre of Athens) those days, that is going to be something special.

Have a great time in Athens!
