The moon generally rises between 25 and 50 minutes later on each successive day. The phase of the moon will dictate when it will rise. Full Moons always rise near sunset. Half Moons (First Quarter) will rise around noon, Gibbous moons will rise either a couple of hours before sunset or a couple of hours after sunset. New moons and crescent moons spend the majority of their time in the sky during the day.

It can appear at any time of the day or night. Since it orbits the Earth once a month, it passes the Sun in our sky 12 times a year. At the time it is passing the Sun, called new Moon, it is not lit up and is in the same part of the sky as the Sun so you can't see it. A few days later it is a thin crescent that sets shortly after the Sun does. A few days later, and a week after new Moon, it is a half Moon that sets about midnight. It can also be seen rising in the east about noon at such times. A week later, half a month from new, it is a full Moon, rising at sunset and setting at sunrise. Another week later it is half again, but it doesn't rise until midnight and it is high in the sky at sunrise. It sets around noon. After a few more days it is a thin crescent that rises just before the Sun does in the morning. A day or two later it is a new Moon again, too close to the Sun to see. Of course the Moon never gets anyway near the Sun in space, it is only seen in the same direction as the Sun, and since you can't tell just by looking that the Sun is 400 times farther away than the Moon (and 400 times bigger so they appear to be the same size), they seem to be close to each other as we look at them from the Earth.
