If I were you I'd get to a gym and run 50 to 100 laps around it nonstop. that should get your condition up.

some things u can do around home since most 8th graders havent started working out in weight rooms, is grab a cinder block or galon of milk and hold one in each hand, and do a lung where u step forward and bend straight down, then push with power using ur thigh back to a standing position, then switch feet, that will improve ur hops and strength to squat in a defensive position longer... another thing is stand on the edge of a stair with ur heels hanging off, and just use ur toes to raise ur self up (calf raises) this will build up ur calves and give u better hops and helps u be on ur toes more... if u run at all, put some weights on atleast ur ankles, maybe ur wrist, and if u want wear a vest... do some sprints, because a lot of the running/conditioning in basketball is sprints, and if u can be prepared to do the sprints u will stand out... be eager to learn and listen, and acknowledge all the advice coaches give u... show that u care, be on time, be involved if hte coach asks for a volunteer, dont cause any problems, show that u can get along with the team, and the hardest thing but best thing especially as an 8th grader is to be a leader... it takes lots of things first u cant just boss people around, but u have to set a good example and not goof off and work hard, other leadership skills is keeping ur teamates in line and focused, and the most imortant two things is motivate the team vocally, say come on we can do, and good spirited comments...and the other important thing is when the coaches arent looking and players take that time to slack off, DONT even if they dont see u, they can feel it, and the respect u have for them to work even when there not looking they will notice... some more drills would be dribbling, work on dribbling through the legs, around the leg, and just get it down where ur comfortable dribbling that it seems like its just natural... some things coaches do in basketball is has the team take free throws and if u miss u do a sprint, now of course there not gonna cut someone caused they missed a few freethrows but if u are composed and are pretty consistent it will stand out... lastly just get stretched out so u dont pull anything when the time comes, getting hurt in a tryout is almost a ticket out the door, its really hard to make a team when u start out hurt!!! good luck

First off Good luck with your tryouts. I made a division 3 college team last year, and was in the same position. Yeah, I made it there, but I didnt play hardly any. I too did not do much excercises or practice over the summer much, which I highly regret doing! Dont waste your summers if you are really serious about basketball, learn from my mistakes.
What you can do though, is do lots of RUNNING! Do some sprints, run everyday if you can, get that body in shap. Do not work out much! If you work out your arms you will lose your shot, work out during the off season. Do ALOT of shooting around, you are only in 8th grade so you probably dont have to worry about a job, so spend HOURS shooting and running. Practice your weak spots. Get a few friends who are better than you so that they will push you more.
Most people will say, "too bad for you, you wasted it". Yeah, you wasted your summer not working out, but there is always a chance, you will always have your good shooters and rebounders, but a hard worker is more impressive, and if you work hard at tryouts, and show your coach that you have what it takes and you will work your heart out to win, they will notice that, and thats what makes a good player, in my opinion. And remember that basketball is supposed to be fun. But take it from me, your Jr. High and H.S. Days will be over before you know it, so if you are serious about bball, work at it everyday you can! And if you dont make the A-Team this year, dont let that bring you down, let it push you to work harder for next year, when you are in High School! And let me know how you do...because I was in the same situation through High School, but even though people said that I would never make it to college to play basketball, I did. Let the one's who put you down push you to work harder. Email me and let me know how it goes, I hope this helps. celica_pete21@yahoo.com

I can feel your pain. I actually asked my coach on one occasion (when i was in highschool) to be put on the B-team so i could get more minutes. Heres what he told me and I hope it'll help you.
Take it to the first team in scrimmage like the guy in fron of you is your worst enemy. Wear into him, so much that the moment he makes a mistake, the coach has no problem pulling him and putting you in. Go at him hard in practice. Adn when and if you scrimmage the b-team, or sohpmore/jv when its your time to shine let them know youre on the court.
I went this road, and even though i didnt get into the starting 5 , i got 16 minutes of solid game playper game in 40 minute games.
I played 4/5 i went at the starting power and center so much that they told the coach i might be on drugs. I would get about as physical as one cold w/o crossing the line, and after every miss I ran up the court about as fast as the pg.

You need to get a basketball and take it everywhere with you so you could get the feeling of the ball again.
