Are you trying to melt soap you bought from a shop that can be used straight away or did you buy glycerine soap from a specialist soap making suppliers.
Most soap you buy from a shop will burn.
You need to go to a craft shop or buy online, if you get it from a soap making suppliers it will work fine. Search for soap making online and you will find lots of useful sites.

Well, I tell you what... you think YOU have problems. I wanted to make soap by collecting pan drippings from the stove, all the grease and fat from meat and such, and saving it and then melting that and pouring water through wood ash to make lye... I could never save up enough grease fast enough. I do have a pile of ash from the fireplace and still want to do this but I need tons of fat and grease. It's nice to be able to use things that would normally be thrown away and use them instead as a raw material to make something else. For this reason I do not want to go to the store and buy a big can of lard... that would be cheating and not the way the early settlers did it.

I have never tried doing what you are doing, but I do know that even in the process I want to use there is a fairly critical temperature range that is optimal. Maybe you are just using too much heat, if it is burning that is what it seems to me, or maybe the pot has to be covered. The soap was originally made by being "cooked" so you should be able to re-melt it.

I just stumble along and eventually figure things out... most of the time. Good luck.

I use my microwave, and a 2-cup pyrex measuring cup whenever I make soaps. The small batches ensure the soap won't start to burn before the bulk of it melts, and the microwave makes it quick and easy. Cut up the soap into 1" chunks before starting, so it will melt easier than if it were a huge chunk, and melt it on a moderate (not the super-highest you've got) setting in the microwave for a couple of minutes at a time, stirring it up a bit between runs to make sure it melts evenly.
