Denis Savard used to sharpen his after every period, in some cases when he wasn't playing on the penalty kill, he would get them sharpened during short handed situations as well.

NHL players get their skates sharpened every day

If you want to keep the edges sharp, they should be sharpened every 5-6 hours of skating

Ice Skate Sharpening Tool

There's a lot of factors that go into that.

How sharp you like your skates, how deep a hollow you have, how often you skate and what kind of skating you do.

If you're talking hockey skates, and you're playing games and practices, and getting your skates sharpened at a 1/2 inch hollow, you can probably get by with sharpening them once every five or six games or practices.

If you get a more serious edge on your skate, and like it that way, you'll have to sharpen it oftener (once every three games or even less) to maintain it.

It also depends on whether or not you take care of your skates and if the blade steel is good quality. Things like keeping the blades covered dry and not banging them around and nicking them make a difference.

There's a bunch of good information here:

it depends ive both played hockey and figure skated, and for hockey, if ur a goalie, its every game because u have to be sure that u can dig in and move and not slip, plus scuffing up the crease to slow down the puck will dull them a lil...if ur a position player u want to sharpen them before any tournaments cause u probably wont have time during a tourney, and if u feel urself losing a little control when u stop of try and power stride it is because one side is worn out a lil, so it will be a good idea to sharpen them, now if u a defender sometimes u get one side more worn then the other because of skating backwards, and sharpening them can confuse u and get ur edge caught... in figure skating most of the work is on the spikes in the front of the skate, but with all ofo the sharp turns in figure skating, so i suggest if ur not gonna sharpen them every or everyother time, then sharpen them when u first begin working on a routine, then if u have a competition sharpen them probably a week before so u get the right feeling down, then the day of ur competition... good luck!

if you skate 4 hours a week then youd probably sharpen every 2-3 months i skate 3 hours every day and get skates sharpened every 3-4 weeks caution dont sharpen your skates too often rub your nail against the edge of the bottom of the blade if it doesnt leave a tiny mark on your nail, then it should be sharpened

hmm about 1-2 week if your a ice skater. Why? cuz the blade can be dull if you sharpen it every contest you have. In hockey its not very effective to sharpen your skates before game because it can lessen the grip of the blades in the skates that can slow you down.

When they get dull...

All kidding aside, if you skate often, you can tell they are getting dull from the feel of them on the ice... however make sure it is the blade, and not just poorly maintained ice...

If you can run the broad part of your fingernail perpendicularly away from the skate blade and not have some get shaved off, they're too dull...
