EMO stands for "Emotional". It is a type of music and also lifestyle that is a sweeping trend for young people. It is like "wearing your heart on a sleeve" Some of the EMO groups are "Hawthorne Heights, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, ... among others" The songs are very emotional and sometimes depressing. Unfortunately many "emo" kids are into self mutilation , as in cutting themselves. The Emo kids usually dress somewhat Gothic, in dark clothing.

Emo is a music genre, derived from emocore, which is hardcore with deeper lyrics. Emo was mangled into a type of music that has boys singing about their girlfriends dumping them, with soft, sad tunes, usually acoustic. Bands like Hawthorne Heights are not emo. It is a made up genre by MTV. Real emo would be a band like Hot Cross [which i love]. Emo 'people' [which is ridiculous, you cannot be a genre of music] wear tight skinny jeans, usually black, with dark smudged eyeliner, black hair, and band tees.

Nowadays, however, it can mean the music genre, or emo fashion.

emo is when somone cuts themselves on purpose because they think that their EMOtional pain will be turned into physical pain and it makes them feel better

It stands for "Emergency Mouth Off", and happens when someone does or says something so stupid and idiotic that you just cannot control yourself and have to mouth off immediately and with extreme emotion right up in their face.

My understanding of it is people who dress a cross between punk/ska and kind of 60's. I could be wrong.
