I believe that for him to reclaim Statutary sick pay he has to have evidence of sickness....most companies have a Sickness form to complete once you are back...don't think there is anything sinister in it

What is not in your contract? There is no provision for you to take a half-day absence? There is no requirement that you "self-certify" that you took a day's absence?

Is there is a penalty for taking a half-day absence? Is there a requirement to get permission before you take an absence? For an emergency?

If in fact you took an absence, there should not be an issue about documenting that you did so, but without knowing what's in the contract or the company rules/policies regarding absences and the reason for the absence, it's impossible to evaluate the consequences of doing so. Any penalty, of course, comes from taking the absence, not from saying you took it.

Yes of course you do. You have a contractual duty to attend your work, that's why you pick up your salary at the end of the week/month, remember?
You expect to get paid yet object to taking the responsibility to show up?
You object to a little form filling?
Grow up!

I would ask why they want you to do this - you can only claim SSP (Statutory Sick Pay) after 3 days illness.

Don't know if you have to but why wouldn't you? It's my belief self-certification is for absences of up to 7 days so you should complete it.

Yes, it is no skin off your nose and it will keep him happy.

My employer has stopped bothering with them altogether, so I don't have such a worry
