If you have them clean then the problem is what you are using to wipe. Yes, crumpled newspaper works real well, but the new inks do leave a film. Invest in a micro fiber cloth and you'll never have any problems. For the technique - start at the outside edge, make sure you get the corners, then start at the top and go side to side working your way down. If you are doing the other side of the glass start the same way only instead of side to side go up & down, that way you can tell which side of the window is messed up. I hope this helps.

dusters and cleaning cloths tend to have some residual fibres or remnants of polish in them, and so they can smear and streak.
The best i have found for windows and mirrors is to make up a weak solution of washing up liquid in luke warm water and rub than over the window/mirror with a cloth or a sponge.
Then take a sheet of newspaper ( any old newspaper will do), scrunch it up and wipe the water away with that. Use another sheet to then polish.....spotless.

There is nothing out there better than Basic H2 Organic Super Cleaning Wipes from the Get Clean line of home products. No smears or streaks, and they're biodegradable! You can use them on glass and other surfaces, too. http://www.shaklee.net/wealth-via-health/getclean/ourproducts/basich2/wipes

They make these new cleaning clothes now that are smear free
You can use them on about everything! They work great on windows and mirrors! They are kinda like a chamois cloth. Look at Walmart or local store for them.

Does it matter a few smears? I only clean my windows once a year in the house, the car is different as dirty glass at this time of year is a nusiance, but I still put up with a few smears, even with the bright low evening sun

You can use windex and other cleaning solutions. Use some newspaper to clean also as this will give the glass and mirrors a great shiny clear look.

Vinegar and water always works well. I also use Pledge, they have one for all surfaces and it comes in a blue bottle. From my experience, it works really well. Also, don't use paper towels, they tend to leave a lot of lint and stuff behind. I usually use an old t-shirt that's been washed a million times

Dilute some vinegar into warm water, give it a wipe and dry with old scrunched up newspaper (really). Works a treat.
