There are many ways a MS Access application can (or is) be used to make your life easier, let me give you ONE scenario to illustrate and you will realize that it can be repeated or it can apply to so many other situations: I went to work for a graphic arts company 2 years ago as a production manager. Once I settled in and had a few meetings with the owners we identified a few areas that were weak and quite frankly making us lose money, one being that we could not respond as quickly as the competition when an estimate was required, we needed to do a lot of calculations the "old way" and also check inventory, you get the picture I'm sure. I then designed an application that would not only generate the estimate in seconds just by entering the basic information but from there, if the estimate became a real job, we would generate a work order, an invoice at the end, all shipping documents simply by retrieving the job from the database and adding the information as we progressed with the job. Now here's the kicker: it used to take between 5 and 20 minutes to respond to an inquiry (estimate) and now we did it "live" as we were talking to the customer, we could (depending on what the customer preferred) fax the estimate, email it or simply give them a price verbally. The result was that we increased our sales by about 8% and other benefits were that "human error" was considerably reduced afterwards, if the info was entered correctly at the estimate stage then it was easy to avoid mistakes at the job level because the initial data was accurate and never had to be re-written which is where most mistakes happened. Our invoicing accuracy was increased and therefore not as many corrections were needed and errors on invoicing are the worst thing (they delay payment and aggravate the customer).
I hope this gives you an idea of what happens in "real life" when you use a tool such as Access to make things better.

It's a database system used to store and report data. Real world scenarios would be things like company reporting (ie production reports, efficiency reports).
You can also manipulate the data in MSAccess. Calculations for both the past and the predictable future for sales for example.
You could also create a database and report on personal things: recipes, collectibles, addressbook.
