That honour must go to Brian Clough, who had magnificent success with two different small clubs (neither of whom have done anything since he left). He also crafted journeymen footballers into first class teams. All this without massive financial assisstance.

Statistically, the best there is in British football. He broke the Old Firm's monopoly in the Scottish Premier League with Aberdeen, won more Premier League titles than any other manager, double double, the treble, built 3 separate world class teams in his time at Manchester United with a fantastic youth policy. Only thing he could do better is to win a third Champions League trophy to match Paisley. Did he have the best resources? Well, Big Ron had the same resources and had only FA Cups to show for it. Liverpool and Chelsea later on also had huge resources, but let's remember how many Fergie's Fledgings graduated from the academy to bring more success to Man U. Just remember Alan Hansen's famous words "You'll never win anything with kids" :) As for proverbs's statement of never managing a national team, he obviously did not know SAF was the manager of the Scotland 1986 World Cup team. Granted, he was only Alex Ferguson then :)

Alex Ferguson to date has won 25 major trophies since his time as Man U manager. They included 8 league titles and 2 major european trophies. He has also been awarded manager of the year 6 times.
Bob Paisley won 21 major trophies with Liverpool. They included 6 league titles and 3 European Cups (Champion's League) and 1 UEFA Cup. He was also awarded manager of the year 6 times.
But i would have to say Paisley was the better manager, due to the fact he won the top European trophy 3 times, and the fact he won all those trophies in a 9 year spell at Liverpool. Ferguson is at United 20 years and counting......

Bob Paisley won 6 Championships and 3 European Cups while in charge at Liverpool. He gets my vote. How many other present or future managers of English clubs will win 3 European Cups? Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough deserve a mention too.

It can only be Fergie - he has been at United 20-odd years and has pulled them so many cups it's untrue. Secondly, he's kept the club at a top position through many many seasons.

Really - there is no competition considering how the fitness and the level of play have increased since previous generations. He's keeping the club at the top through extremely competitive times. The premiership has never been so saturated with international talent, and yet he leads the team to astonishing victories with 'home-boys' time after time.

He deserves his knight-hood... and much respect in terms of football management.
