Just about any job now claims they require referees - BUT - as a number of people have already said .... many don't actually check the references ...... sometimes a judgement call is made just to show that you can provide references .... the ones who don't 9/10 times don't get interviewed because they didn't meet the requirements of the application ...... so you decide ..... do you want the chance of an interview - or not ?- if you're not bothered - don't bother with referees......

Most companies are unwilling to give references. If a company does give a reference on you it would only state how long you had worked for them. Due to you being allowed to see any information held on file about you. You could request to see anything written about you. This includes references. If a company has given you a negative reference they can be taken to a tribunal as this could of stopped you achieving your next position. If you have been dismissed for any reason. The company can say that you were dismissed and the reason would be added as Gross Misconduct. They would not state the reason why.

To be honest, almost all good employers will check references.
You may be able to get a cash-in-hand bar or waiting staff job without having references checked.

Almost any responsible employer will check references. But often, people get lazy and don't.

mainly if you work at airports etc you will get them checked but cash in hand and driving jobs i would expect they wouldnt!
