Your own intuition is the best guide. Reputable sites, like Yahoo!, CNN, Amazon, your bank's website etc. are generally safe. Sites that offer free smileys or screensavers, or tell you that you can earn thousands a week for doing nothing, are generally not safe.

Also, you should think about what you mean by "safe." If you mean that you can't get a virus from the site, then every site is safe, as long as you don't downwload any executable code from it.

If you mean that the site doesn't have ****, well, you can pretty much tell by looking at it.

If you mean that you can buy something from the site and get what you paid for, you should choose dealers that have a good reputation or ones that your friends have used successfully.

So, there are lots of possible meanings of "safe." In general, common sense goes a long way.

how do you mean safe? do you mean like a bank website? bank websites have a secured logo that comes up on the bottom of you screen. another way to see if the website is secure is at the beginning of the address...http://www.whatever.com...there will be a (s) after http.... looking like this https://www.whatever.com
otherwise safe meaning can you get a virus/spyware? usually you can only get viruses by downloading something, spyware is on many websites now... so what i would do if i was you. download adaware se. it finds and removes spyware.and thus will speed up your serfing speed.
hope that is the answer you were looking for

If you use FireFox web browser, there is an add on called McafeeSiteAdvisor24. Download it and each site rating is shown near the task bar. I dont think this add on is available for IE and other browsers.
