Well, I've just discussed your question with my cat Sophie and I gather that animals don't have much choice but to listen to we humans!
However, on a serious note, it can act as a stress relieving act to 'talk' to your pet, or simply to sit quietly and stroke the animal - as you clearly have discovered. Indeed, scientific tests have shown that stroking a relaxed cat can lower a person's blood pressure quite significantly, and some old people's homes actively encourage visits from 'therapeutic dogs' which seem to raise the spirits of the guests.
So keep on talking to Charley - he probably quite likes the attention too!

Yes animals are great listeners and they can be a comfort but they cannot offer you advice or be a support to you in the way that your friends and family can. Do not shut people out of your life when you are going through a hard time, find someone you trust to confide in and let them be a support to you and then you can do the same for them if their comes a time when they are in need. That is what life is all about! Caring for each other and being there for each other. Take care and all the best and still enjoy your pets xx

I have a little grey and white cat called Jemima. She is very intelligent and i find whenever i am upset she chirrups and purrs at me and gently nuzzles my face then curls up beside me.She also seems to understand me when i talk to her.I believe animals are far more intuitive than we give them credit for-she can be very naughty and attention seeknig too,and gets in a mood if ive been away, but that makes me love her more!!

dogs are the best!
my dog was a nutter and was always bouncing around and what not but when i was crying or sick she used to come and sit by me quietly and rest her head on my lap or my shoulder as if to say dont worry it will all be ok! If she could talk she would have told a million secrets! and she had big brown eyes that looked as though they understood when you were talking to her! daft as it is! i hate not having a dog aroudn now! miss the chats!!!

When you pat an animal your body releases hormones and chemicals that make you feel good! I think everyone needs an animal to love.

Of course they are!!!! My cat, Eddie, who hates all humans, including me, will not leave my pregnant wife alone. Whenever she's feeling down, or in pain, he's there, doing a far better job than me, at comforting her.
