Losing data on a hard drive is the worst nightmare of any computer owner. However, some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

Sounds like the poor old girl has finally "given up the ghost" ..... 1 mins silence please

They may have tried moving it or knocked it while it was on and the heads have crashed into the platter (meaning your hard-drive is ruined)

Time to get another Computer I'm afraid ... maybe give the kids yours and go treat yourself to a brand newie :)

Most likely the hard drive has died or the file system has been trashed. Professional intervention is needed at this point.

Your hard drive has died. You will need to replace it. (either that, or the kids have played with the connections and you will have to open the case and check them)
