If it is factory refurbished, that means they took a broken iPod and replaced the broken parts.
It would be like if you had a car, and the transmission went bad, and you took it to the dealer and they put a new one on.
It will still work fine, but it won't be quite as good as a brand new one. If you are willing to get less quality for less money, I'd say get an off brand mp3 player, not an Apple.

In most cases, yes. Sometimes a piece that is repacked, but has never been sold, i.e. overstock, will be considered refurbished, even though it is truly new. Large retailers usually work out agreements with companies to buy xxx number of items, and, whatever they do not sell in a certain period of time is sent back to the manufacturer, who will repackage and resell the overstock.
Now, sometimes, refurbished is actually refurbished, customer buys the piece, it's defective, they return it, it goes back to the manufacturer, they fix it and repackage and resell it. In most cases, the warranty will still be the same as on a new piece.
The biggest thing with an Ipod is the battery, for some reason, there are right many of them out there with batteries that go kerflooie.

I've always had good luck with refurbished items. They don't come with the same extensive warrently as the new ones, but they also usually come at half the price. I have a refurbished I-Pod and it works great (I think it came with a 1 year warrently). I would recommend getting one from Apple, though, instead of another site. When you buy a refurbished product, it's best to get it from the original manufacturer.

I just got a refurb iPod the other day. LOVE IT! It didn't have any scratches and got here in only two days. Free shipping I might add. I saved 70 bucks. Works very well, came with everything I needed. Was very protected inside the box even came with a screen protector. I highly recommend ordering one from apple today. My battery works very well and it also came with a 90 day, a 180 day and whole year warranties.
